Labour stayed anti EU to well in to the 80's and I'm convinced only became pre-EU because Maggie was an EU Skeptic and had many a pitched battle with them.

There's a conspiracy theory that says Murdoch has to keep the EU off his back so that they don't do him for monopoly abuses.
So the deal is, Murdoch's papers back the more pro-EU party (who always win) and the EU leave him in peace.
