On this day

in 1968 Dr Christiaan Barnard carried out the first heart transplant.

I remember it well. Of course everything was in black and white then and the TV pictures were very grainy, but it did appear to be very special and the start of a brave new world. It was, but probably took longer then everyone imagined, as things always do.
